What to Pack for Your First Solo Trip: The Ultimate Packing Guide

By Nadine   |   Posted Jul 16, 2026

Packing for your first solo trip can feel like a balancing act. You want to be prepared for every possible scenario, but you also don’t want to be dragging a giant suitcase through cobblestone streets or up three flights of stairs.

Trust me, I’ve learned that less really is more.

One of the biggest mistakes first-time solo women travelers make is overpacking. We tend to pack for every “what if,” only to realize we wear the same handful of outfits and wish we’d left room for souvenirs.

The good news? You don’t need to pack your entire closet to have an amazing trip. Here’s what I consider the essentials for traveling confidently and comfortably.

Choose the Right Luggage

Before you think about what’s going in your suitcase, think about the suitcase itself.

If you’re moving between cities or taking trains, a lightweight carry-on or medium-sized suitcase is often your best friend. It will be much easier to manage on your own, especially if you have to navigate stairs, busy train stations, or uneven sidewalks.

Pair it with a comfortable backpack or crossbody bag for your day-to-day exploring.

When you’re traveling solo, being able to handle your own luggage comfortably is a huge confidence boost.

Pack Versatile Clothing

The easiest way to avoid overpacking is to choose pieces that mix and match.

Stick with neutral basics, then add a few colorful accessories if you like a little personality in your wardrobe. Think comfortable jeans or pants, a few tops you can layer, one dress that works for both sightseeing and dinner, and a lightweight jacket.

Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes. You’ll almost always walk more than you expect.

The goal isn’t to have a different outfit for every day. It’s to have outfits that work for multiple occasions.

Keep Your Important Documents Organized

This might not be the most exciting part of packing, but it’s definitely one of the most important.

Keep your passport, travel insurance information, copies of important documents, and any reservation details in one easily accessible place. It’s also a good idea to save digital copies in secure cloud storage, just in case.

Being organized helps reduce stress when you’re moving between destinations.

Don’t Forget Your Safety Essentials

You don’t need to pack a suitcase full of safety gadgets.

Instead, focus on practical items that make traveling easier. A portable phone charger, reusable water bottle, small first aid kit, luggage lock, and any personal medications should all make the list.

A crossbody bag with secure zippers is another favorite among experienced solo women travelers, since it keeps your essentials close while you’re exploring.

Pack for Comfort, Not Just Photos

We’ve all seen those perfectly curated travel photos online.

The reality is that most days involve walking, waiting at airports, hopping on trains, and spending hours exploring new places.

Comfort should always win.

When you feel comfortable, you’ll enjoy the experience so much more.

Leave Room for the Unexpected

One of my favorite packing tips is to intentionally leave a little extra space in your suitcase.

Whether it’s local treats, handmade souvenirs, or that sweater you absolutely didn’t plan on buying, you’ll probably come home with more than you left with.

Your future self will thank you.

Why Small Group Tours Make Packing Easier

One unexpected benefit of joining small group tours is that you usually know exactly what to expect.

When your itinerary is planned, it’s much easier to pack appropriately. You’ll know whether you’re spending more time hiking, exploring cities, relaxing on the beach, or enjoying cultural experiences.

That’s one of the things I love about The Solo Travel Collection. Their thoughtfully planned solo tours provide detailed information before you leave, so you’re not left wondering whether you packed the right shoes or enough layers. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of preparing for your trip.

Your First Trip Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

Here’s something I wish someone had told me before my first solo adventure.

You’ll probably forget something.

And that’s okay.

Unless you’re traveling somewhere extremely remote, you can usually buy anything you’ve accidentally left behind. Don’t let packing anxiety stop you from booking the trip you’ve been dreaming about.

The most important thing you’re bringing isn’t in your suitcase. It’s your curiosity, your willingness to try something new, and your excitement to explore the world.

If you’re looking for an easy way to ease into solo women travel, joining one of The Solo Travel Collection’s small group tours is a great place to start. You’ll spend less time worrying about logistics and more time making memories with women who are just as excited to explore as you are.

Next up in the series, we’ll answer a question many first-time travelers ask: Are small group tours worth it? We’ll break down why they’ve become one of the most popular ways for women to experience solo travel with confidence.
